100% British

Posted By: Sally HawkesMay 17th, 2012

So far this year, it is apparent that products and companies are getting on the ‘British’ band wagon to further promote their products & boost sales. I feel that products that have longevity and have been established for a very long time are more likely to be successful at using the Great Britain angle that is very current this year with the Jubilee and Olympics.

Hovis has been established for 125 years & the brand has always been known for its heritage & strength. So this year, they are celebrating their heritage & the work they have done with British Farmers, by making a 100% British wheat loaf.

Chief executive of Premier Foods, the company that makes Hovis said: “In this year of British celebration we believe more and more of our retail customers and consumers will be choosing to buy British brands like ours, made in Britain, supporting British jobs”.

(Interesting that Hovis did not plaster the Union Jack all over the packaging…)

To promote this product, they have created a new TV advert. I always quite like the Hovis ads but this one really struck me. This advert shows a heart warming relationship between father and son. The advert shows the farmers daily routine and the hard work that goes into farming.

You see the boy toil and work hard determined to make his father proud until he eventually earns his respect through overcoming the challenges his father faces. The advert reinforces the hard work that goes into every Hovis 100% British Farmers Loaf. The adverts always seem quite meaningful compared to some other adverts we are bombarded with.

Celebrating packaging

Posted By: jnichollsMay 14th, 2012

With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee just weeks away, it seems like everyone is suddenly becoming very patriotic. Even food products are joining the celebration with some great limited edition packaging. Two of the best examples I have seen are for Golden Syrup and for Marmite.

Sculpture, art? Either way, brilliant!

Posted By: Ray CalderMay 13th, 2012

A few of my recent blogs have been looking at ways artists are finding innovative techniques to create amazing fresh art. In browsing the web this week I came across Andrew Myers and his brilliant work that crosses painting with sculpture to create an amazing end result. Based in California, he is a sculptor and painter but his screw art is so amazing it makes you want to touch it. He starts with a plywood base panel, draws out a face by hand, and then drills 8,000 to 10,000 holes, again by hand. He then builds up the piece by adding the screws to different depths, all judged by eye – no computer or projection in sight. The finishing touch is created by then painting the screw heads, producing portraits with depth and detail.

Picking up Stik

Posted By: jnichollsMay 13th, 2012

A few months ago I saw some graffiti sprayed onto one of the shutters in a row of shops in London. It was of a stickman; something about the simplistic style of it made it very appealing. I remember thinking that it would make a great logo for the right project.

Relaxing typography

As a fan of typography, this image caught my eye recently. Making beautiful type from hand crafted elements rather than digitally is an interesting idea.

In loving memory of ‘Where the Wild things are’ author

Posted By: Nigel PetersMay 9th, 2012

Maurice Sendak the author and illustrator of the classic book ‘Where the Wild things are’, has died this week. I remember the effect the strong illustrations had on my young mind, no matter how disturbing I found it, I still picked it up to read it over again.

Taking Facebook Literally!

Posted By: Simon WhiteMay 4th, 2012

I noticed this on the web and thought… WOW! Although I have seen this kind of thing before I have never seen it used so well. Using this finishing method to create the face of the person who the book is about makes it more than just a unique finish, it makes it a really good creative idea.

More words as pictures

Posted By: jnichollsApril 30th, 2012

I recently wrote a blog about a typographic project using just the Helvetica font. Ji Lee published a book called ‘Word as image’, illustrating a series of words. This inspired me to have a go at creating some examples of my own to see how many I could come up with. Below is the next installment of my attempts. To be continued..
