The best Restaurant Brand?

Posted By: Ray CalderOctober 29th, 2011

This may be a controversial subject? By brand I mean visual brand, of course the quality of food, ambiance and service are very important parts of a restaurant’s overall brand. I have eaten in Garfunkel’s quite a fair amount over the years, with my limited food palette and even fussier son, it has often been the safest place to eat while in London. Like McDs you always now what you can expect, every Garfunkel’s is identical.

On a recent trip to the O2 we popped in to Garfunkel’s and much to my sons amazement, I took the attached photos of their latest menus which I love the design of. Using iconic imagery of a city landscape has been done to death but these still look interesting and current. I also like the canvas wraps on the walls but they are of a slightly different interpretation of London. However when I checked, the London illustration on their website was different again which is a shame.

So what is the visual restaurant brand you like and why?

…enter Wahaca! The mexican restraunt chain developed by Thomasina Miers, Masterchef winner and lover of all things Mexican.
She has superbly and boldly imported a slice of Mexican market life to London’s West End. themed heavily on Mexican wall art (Graffiti to the less than impressed).

I’ve commented before on how often designers plagiarize (steel) art for commercial and reputational gain such as with Snow Patrol’s shameless BANKSY rip-off for their ‘Final straw’ album cover (see attached) Wahaca however pay homage to this art-form by building upon it with photography and imagery of Mexican life & culture – the mix is seamless to the point that it is it has evolved to become art in its own right.

    Great work Wahaca!
…oh, and the Garfunkels menu IS nice …well done you too.

Would have to say that, aswell as the food, I like the branding Nandos. Their tone of voice that they use from their menus to their supermarket products echos a picture that eating at their restaurant is a fun experience.

I’m quite interested in Pizza Express at the moment. They have just launched one of the biggest rebrands which sees their new logo, replacing the previous blue and white version, as homage to the black-and-white striped shirts worn by traditional pizza chefs. A black and white stripe design for all uniforms and crockery will also be introduced. But to further push the whole package rebrand they have hired conversation expert Karl James to retrain all 10,000 staff to deliver a better level of service. Designer Ab Rogers has also been brought in to help deliver the brand refresh, which will involve all 400 branches being redesigned to tell a local story. I’ll be interested to see the result. Not sure if its necessary the best visual brand, although the Pizza Express in Romford is currently going through the refresh and looks very striking.

I still like the EAT brand for its simplicity. It does feel like a whole brand experience when you go to one of their shops.

I like Nandos because when I sent them a letter of complaint they responded to it in a kind of’ happy chicken’ way that you could only expect from Nandos. Pizza Express, is like a place to eat, I like it because it’s got a little bit of a nice restaurant atmosphere but it’s not as stuffy. Wahaca, love it every body always talks about the free chilli seeds you get there, and I love their web site.
