Angry Birds – The World’s most influential game ever?

Posted By: Ray CalderNovember 19th, 2011

Watching the TV tonight I was captivated by seeing Angry Birds in an advert to promote ‘Wonderful’ pistachio nuts. This advert (above) is OK but it just made me smile to see the game become so popular and influential that it can sell products. It has to be said I do not watch a lot of TV, or are that interested in the Apps craze, so everyone else may already know what I have discovered, but if you haven’t you will be amazed/impressed. I knew it was popular but not like this.

Angry Birds is a worldwide phenomenon, not just as a game (By November 2011, the game had reached 500 million downloads) but also award winning, has become part of our language referred to in lots of TV shows and Films, has star followers from David Cameron to Salman Rushdie. To read the whole story visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angry_Birds the numbers are staggering. Most unusual fact – Giridhari Dasa of ISKCON Brazil uses Angry Birds in a 5-part essay to explain Yoga Philosophy.

In marketing terms I was blown away by the impact of this puzzle video game developed by Finnish computer game developer Rovio Mobile in 2009. For promotional power it has to be the most influential game ever created (not just digital but since games began). With a little bit of research I managed to watch most of the numerous adverts that have used Angry Birds to promote their products, from Bing to Nokia. But my favourite is below and I just wish I was there… say no more. I had to share this one, ENJOY!

T Mobile are always very innovative with their advertising ‘events’ like the dancing in the train station so it is not surprising that they created the live Angry Birds game – what a fab idea!

All I can think about the live event is ‘let me have a go’! A friend who is a teacher told me a colleague of hers has name his primary school class tables after the names of the angry birds. I’m really not sure this is appropriate but it does show how immersed in our culture they are.

Angry birds is a fantastic game that everybody can play but I still think the Tetris is the most influential game ever.
