VW Create a classy advert

Posted By: Ray CalderNovember 27th, 2011

The VW Blue Motion advert played to a soundtrack of the beach boys has been out for a few weeks now, but always brings a smile to my face when it is played. The advert is particularly refreshing from a car brand with no polished car, open road, glamorous models in sight. But even more important, it does a great job of pitching the brand as cool and contemporary, pleasing their existing followers and engaging with the new audience they are trying to target as well.

I love the choice of music, perfect at a time when everyone seems to think the past was better, nostalgia and retro is the future (if that makes sense?). It is up beat and made me want to absorb the whole advert, the eco message as well. Too often an eco story is promoted with a negative – this engaged with me better.

Digging a little further I have also found a video of the making of the advert. It is interesting although the detail of the full production story, from concept right through to creation, is a little sketchy. Really it is a new music video for the classic song but still good to watch – I think this could have been a little more fun to deliver the icing on the cake for the campaign?

But what I also like is the main Think Blue VW website which has some really great graphics, also produced in a fun engaging way. Putting everything together this has certainly made me see VW in a different light. Click here to take a look at the Think Blue website and let us know what you think.

I really like the VW advert you are referring to, it is a brilliant way to simply reinforce the durability of the brand VW and hark back to their past accomplishments. The use of the hand drawing makes the advert quirky and friendly and what they are really saying is how good their future technology is – in a non-technical over-the-top way.

The Think Blue website is also clever and simple and doesn’t over complicate the messages.

I really liked this AD, it was genuinely interesting to watch. May be because I am a designer the first thing I thought about was ‘how would I have made it’ now I know.
