VW Create Star Wars Ad Episode II

Posted By: Ray CalderJanuary 21st, 2012

I don’t know where to start with this, I have only just stopped laughing out loud (note no abbreviation) at catching a first glimpse of the next VW advert teaser for their main spot at this years Super Bowl. This years advert teaser above called ‘The Bark Side’, features a dozen dogs all beautifully performing one of the iconic pieces of music from Star Wars, the ‘Imperial March’.

The Dutch agency Interpublic Group of Cos, have created the ad from their division in LA. It follows on from the great success of their ‘The Force’ advert from last year, which thankfully also made it to main stream TV here in the UK. Last years ad below, was one of my favourite ads of the year, not only because me and my son love and watch Star Wars, but mainly because it had a clear message about pitching the brand to a family audience. It showed understanding of real family life, but of course with brilliant humour.

While I also love this years ad (which I am sure will be as big a viral success as last years), it feels a little like they have continued the Star Wars theme more blindly, perhaps not appreciating it was the depth of last years advert, that made it truly special and voted the favourite of the year in consumer awards.

Saying all that, this is such a cool advert, the attention to detail in the dogs costumes is superb. And watch out for a great ‘walk on’ part by a greyhound – just awesome!

And the Star Wars fun does not end there. At the end of the ad, we are driven to a URL on VW’s website that houses an “Intergalatic Invite Creator,” all done in typical Star Wars style. The teaser spot closes by saying VW is “Back. And Better Than Ever.” Long may they continue!

LOL (notice the abbreviation ;) ) either this IS fantastic or I am barking too. It took a few seconds to spot the black dog’s breastplate and thinking, that looks like Darth Vader’s… then I spotted a few others. Princess Leia, Luke, an Ewok, Chewie, Han, C3-PO… I have rewined so many times trying to match the others up that I only saw the at-at walking on at the end.
my only question is are all the dog in character and where’s Yoda and R2-D2?

Take a look at my Star-Paws line-up and let me know if I have got any wrong and who the missing ones are.

Okay, I have it on probably the best authority – one that rumor has it, Lucas himself calls on his knowledge of Star Wars for help – Ben (age 9). The black and white dog on the middle row far left is Lando Calrissian – who am I to disagree?

I liked this advert but other than following on from VW’s last meaningful Star Wars advert, I don’t really get why they have created it? It’s great fun and I wonder if I can get a ‘Chewy’ outfit for my dog Alfie?
