Knitters go guerilla, drop yarn bombs

Posted By: Jo BritonJanuary 30th, 2012

Yarn bombing, aka yarnstorming, guerrilla knitting or graffiti, is a form of street art that has been gaining popularity over the last year.

Thought to have originated in Texas, USA, knitters and crocheters cover urban objects in the street with fuzzy funkiness.

Now “craftivists” in West Cornwall have been invited through Facebook to show their work in New York by the magazine Vogue Knitting.

I’m someone who admires skills of varying degrees in people but particularly knitting as I can’t knit at all – not scarves, not bobble hats, definitely not guerilla style. So I’ve found some fun examples of yarn bombs to share with you.

The bus is just amazing but also must have been planned and therefore not quite as fun, especially compared to the bike – imagine coming back to your bike looking like that! The tree is pretty cool. My favourite is the row of statues, I don’t know what it is, but I am sure that has some form of symbolism. All round a better expression than normal Graffiti – the original is not defaced.

I like the tree knit effort. Very effective. I think we should do this to trees in the winter to brighten up the world!

The bus is amazing but for me the tree is the best, it’s what I imagine a bubblegum tree would look like.
