Yes… these are created on a typewriter!

Posted By: Ray CalderFebruary 4th, 2012

As amazing as this seems, all these illustrations have been created with a traditional typewriter by a very talented British artist Keira Rathbone. Her ‘typewriting art’ covers many different subjects including architecture, people and landscapes.

Keira bought her first typewriter eight years ago and she now owns some 30 vintage typewriters from all over the world. What I find really interesting is the vision she must have to create each piece, being able to see the image gradually appearing behind the keys. This must be so much harder than any other illustration method. If anyone has tried this let me know.

Another intriguing part of the story is how she has used a very modern medium (video and YouTube) to get herself well known, despite being an obvious fan of the past. She has created a video of herself at work and this shows how she really lives through her art, dressing in clothes appropriate from the age her typewriters were manufactured. I think this is very, very clever on her part, and enables her fans and followers to have a closer relationship with her.

All round Keira is a very clever and talented young woman.

Wow, this is amazing, and we thought typewriters were extinct! I like the way Keira also dresses, very in keeping with the era.

I am so luck y I don’t have an old typwritter – I wouldn;t be able to resit doing one of my own :)

..instead, I wrote this little program so that we can all be typewritter artists.

I love things like this, everyone has seen paintings before and sometimes it can seem quite boring but when you see how somebody has produced the picture it brings the wow factor back in.
