Less words more impact

Posted By: Ray CalderApril 29th, 2012

Driving home from the studio I pass through a busy road junction that has lots of shops and numerous billboards, all competing for my attention. Within this branding/advertising overload my visual senses zoomed in to one very eye-catching advert from Miele. It is clever, fun, engaging, but above all else really stands out in a crowded market place because it is all this while being simple.

I love Covent Garden… Identity

Posted By: Simon WhiteApril 27th, 2012

I noticed the Covent Garden identity the other day for the first time and I have to say I thought it was brilliant. I think most people will agree the actual logo itself has obvious qualities, it’s clean simple and visually interesting. But what I love about it the most is the way it can be rolled out to cover large surface areas while still keeping the all important CG in the centre.

Thinking outside the pixelated box

Posted By: jnichollsApril 25th, 2012

This week Design Week posed the question ‘What’s the best use of a QR code that you have seen?’ With the ugly pixelated boxes appearing on everything now, and often adding little to no extra value, it’s reassuring to see that there are ways to use them in a more creative way. My particular favourite is from the marketing team at Heineken. At a recent music festival in Poland they managed to create a campaign that got everyone talking – literally!

Made by hand

Posted By: Nigel PetersApril 19th, 2012

I watched a series of interesting videos, focused on areas of skill and creativity I have never seen in action. I was quite fascinated by these exclusive areas of work. Being a creative type and listening to how they describe their working environment, relationships with existing clients and watching their passion, gives me that boost to keep finding my own inspirations.

The Knife Maker

Made by Hand / No 2 The Knife Maker from Bureau Of Common Goods on Vimeo.

Have a look at the other videos after the break. Hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

Criminally good packaging

Posted By: jnichollsApril 18th, 2012

In 2009 Neil Stansfield from Northamptonshire was jailed for two years for having packaging that was too good to be true. He was convicted for buying own-brand, non-organic supermarket food and then repackaging it and selling it on at a massive markup as ethically-sourced organic produce. Highly reputable food retailers couldn’t get enough of it.

Animated Origami typeface

Posted By: Ray CalderApril 15th, 2012

At Acumen Design we have been exploring making videos; not those bound for fame at the Oscars but short corporate style clips that are great ways to promote a company in sixty seconds on the internet. In fact with a little bit of training due shortly, and our creative thinking caps on, watch out for the Acumen Design showreel shortly.

Words or pictures?

Posted By: jnichollsApril 13th, 2012

Whilst researching a project recently, I came across a great short video called ‘word as image’. It’s by a designer called Ji Lee who, until recently, was New York’s Creative Director at Google. The animation uses 39 words all set in san serif fonts with some very clever typography to illustrate each one.
