These photographs are shocking and powerful in equal measure.

Photographer Richard Johnson of Spectacle Photo has a powerful series called ‘Weapon of Choice’ that highlights the pain caused by hurtful words.

In his photographs, victims of emotional, sexual and verbal abuse are depicted with the labels hurled at them like “stupid”, “useless” and “mistake” written on their faces and bodies. World-class professional makeup artists generously donated their time to the project. The artists applied makeup to each participant to simulate an injury, and the hurtful word chosen by the participant was then incorporated.

The Weapon of Choice Project was conceived to provide a visual demonstration of the power of verbal abuse, and it is meant to provoke a conversation about the problems of domestic violence, child abuse, and bullying.

Johnson hopes they will enable people to better visualise how words have the power to inflict trauma on others, as well as give a voice to people who have been abused.

The project is particularly meaningful to Johnson, as he has experienced physical and emotional abuse in the past.
