When watching a historical war film with an approaching army or a fantasy adventure with an ethereal backdrop I often remind myself that the background is probably visual effects, digitally made. However, some look so real it’s hard to imagine how the actor copes with physically interacting with a green screen facing them.
Visual effects are big business. James Cameron’s 2009 blockbuster Avatar spent much of its $300 million budget on groundbreaking motion-capture techniques and CGI.
This collection of before-and-after shots provide a glimpse at what goes on behind the scenes when shooting a big production like Life of Pi or Game of Thrones.
