You can be forgiven for thinking the pictures below are from a gothic architectural building but they are actually layered paper. Eric Standley, a Virginia-based artist who works with laser-cut paper, creates these awe-inspiring layered paper cuts of extreme complexity.

“The reverence for these structures seems to have to do with the infinite,” explained the artist. “It’s trying to project something that’s not even human.”

The artist said that he decided to explore this technique when he had accidentally discovered a pattern in some cereal boxes he had been working with.
